Harold Holzer, renowned Lincoln scholar, will present an illustrated talk on the Lincoln Family Album that he discovered over 40 years ago at Hildene and which contained unknown pictures of the Lincolns dating from the 1850s to the 1950s.

The Lincoln Forum Symposium at Hildene

Hildene is delighted to host The Lincoln Forum, a prestigious national organization dedicated to the study and discussion of Abraham Lincoln and his era. The Symposium offers a unique opportunity to engage with renowned historians, scholars, and thought leaders in an intimate setting. Attendees will discover the compelling legacy of the Lincoln family through expert lectures, engaging panel discussions, and exclusive tours. 

SCHEDULE OF 3-DAY SYMPOSIUM

Friday evening, April 25, begins with a dinner and talk by preeminent Robert Lincoln biographer Jason Emerson at the Equinox Hotel. Mr. Emerson, author of Giant in the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln—the definitive biography on Robert Lincoln—conducted much of his research at Hildene, utilizing our archival collection of over 30,000 Lincoln family artifacts and documents. 

Saturday, April 26, the Lincoln Forum will convene at Hildene’s Lincoln Hall for a full day of lectures and panel discussions exploring the Lincoln family across generations. 

• Vice Chair Jonathan W. White: How Lincoln’s youth shaped the future leader, husband, and father 
• Catherine Clinton: Author of Mrs. Lincoln: A Life will share her updated research of Mary Todd Lincoln’s life and memory 
• Library of Congress Archivist Michelle Krowl: The history of the Robert Todd Lincoln Collection of Abraham Lincoln’s papers housed at the Library of Congress

• Panel Discussion: Featuring Christian McWhirter, Samuel Wheeler, Jason Emerson, and Erin Mast, exploring the lives of the Lincoln children—Robert, Eddie, Willie, and Tad—from Springfield to Hildene 
• Hildene President Brian Keefe: The story of Hildene and the legacy of the Lincoln family 
Small-group tours of Hildene including the home and Pullman car

Saturday evening, April 26, Lincoln Forum attendees and additional Hildene guests will gather at Lincoln Hall for a dinner and keynote address by renowned Lincoln Scholar and Lincoln Forum Chairman Harold Holzer. He will present an illustrated talk, The Lincoln Family Album, featuring rare photographs of the Lincolns discovered at Hildene. Sunday morning, April 27, all speakers will participate in a panel discussion and extended audience Q&A, moderated by Chairman Emeritus Frank J. Williams at the Equinox Hotel. Following the panel, attendees are encouraged to visit Hildene’s Museum Store for an additional opportunity to purchase books, signed copies, and a self-guided tour of Hildene’s 412-acre campus to explore 12 miles of walking trails, Hildene Farm, and breathtaking views.
