Hildene is a story that spans over 100 years, beginning long before Robert Lincoln ever set foot on the promontory above the Battenkill River valley where he built Hildene, which he called his ancestral home.
Robert's father was born in a log cabin and rose from humble beginnings to preside over our nation during one of its most momentous periods of history. After President Lincoln's assassination, this dutiful son dedicated himself to protecting and preserving his father's legacy for future generations.
While he was president of the Pullman Company, the largest manufacturing corporation at the turn of the 20th century, Robert and his wife, Mary, built Hildene as a summer retreat for their family. With privacy from the press and public, Hildene was a happy home for them, their children, and grandchildren. So much so that Robert's beloved granddaughter, Peggy Beckwith, returned to the property after inheriting it to make Hildene her permanent residence until her death.
Today, our nonprofit continues Robert’s work of preserving and advancing his father’s legacy as well as that of Robert, Peggy, and the other Lincoln Family members. The richness of the Lincoln family legacy and the enduring greatness of Abraham Lincoln are woven into the fabric of contemporary life at Hildene, sparking curiosity, dialogue, and a shared commitment to integrity, equality, and community.
