Creating a Sustainable Future
High school students in the Farm and Food Studies program at Burr and Burton Academy (BBA) have the unique opportunity to learn on-site at Hildene Farm.
The mission of Farm and Food Studies is to actively engage students on a working landscape as they build skills to participate in a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.
Partnership with Hildene allows students to access to our unique, historic landscape and the shared facilities of Hildene and BBA, including the state-of-the-art teaching greenhouse, BBA’s farm classroom in an historic 19th century barn, and a dedicated BBA garden. Having a “home base” at Hildene means that students get to know the farm and become stewards of the land.
The knowledge and passion of working farmers are critical to student learning. Collaboration with Hildene Farm staff and additional community partners allows students to learrn about the hard work, dedication, deep understanding, and sense of purpose that drives the work being done here at Hildene and in the broader community.
An Outdoor Classroom
The core of the farm and Food Studies program is on-site, farm-based courses. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the program through class visits, community service days, summer employment, and student clubs.
Farm and Food Studies courses currently taking place at the Hildene Farm Classroom include Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture, CP Farms, Food and Systems Thinking, CP Ethnobotany, and CP/Honors Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. In addition, students can participate in a Farm Skills Internship or become a BBA-Hildene Farm summer employee.
